Chira Kelly thought she didn’t need anyone…until she met Ben.

Because of one ugly rumor, Chira lives as an outcast at her school. Which is fine with her, because she works better alone. Always has, always will. And at least she has her one and only true friend, Tasha. When Tasha insists that they join a group to visit a possibly haunted abandoned old schoolhouse, she’s wary, but joins her friend. Because of that decision, their lives are in jeopardy as a malevolent spirit targets the group. Tragedies and accidents pick them off one by one, and Chira finds herself drawn to the one person who can see the truth. But can he protect her?

Pauline Creeden is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy. In her fiction, she creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, often pulling the veil between dimensions. She becomes the main character in each of her stories, and because she has ADD, she will get bored if she pretends to be one person for too long.

My Review:

This book is the first in the Shadow Maven series, and I am in love! Pauline Creeden is amazing as always with this supernatural mystery. There are layers within this novel that mix the paranormal in just right that it had me from the start. There was no doubt in my mind that this was going to be a quick read for me and not because it was easy. It was simply because the fact that I knew that I was going to love every single moment of reading it. The story starts is off with Chira showing Ben around school because he was new. I liked that Ben was not super outspoken because it made for the mystery of what was drawing Chira’s attraction towards him. I was impressed by the emotion that was able to be felt even though Ben was a character that did not have vertt much dialogue. Ben had a quirk about him also. The quirk was that an owl would follow him whereever he went. This was mysterious and Chira wanted to know more, and quite frankly, so did I. The titling does this book great justice because a first impressions is what ultimately draws someone in or moves them away.

Chira is not popular by any means at her school, but she has a friend that is always there for her, Tasha. I could relate because I was never the popular one in school but friendship that is loyal is sometimes more worth it. I sensed this bond of friendship as soon as Tasha’s character was introduced. Tasha wants to meet up with other classmates at a schoolhouse that is supposed to be haunted based on stories. She ultimately wants to host a Halloween party there. What better setting, right? I would be beside myself visiting any place or thing that was supposed to be haunted but Chira was a trooper. Tasha seemed to bring Chira out of her shell. Every girl has a friend like that (or they should) they can bring out just a little more in yourself than you thought you had in you. I enjoyed learning about Tasha and her family.

First Impression has everything that you would want in a paranormal mystery book. Pauline doesn’t open it right up and start off like that, but instead leads up to it. I think this is what I enjoyed most about the undertones. The book was not harsh or pushy in any way. This was a quick read that was well worth sitting down with and enjoying. Being that it is the beginning of a series, I can not wait for more paranormal fun from Pauline!

Disclosure: I received this book in exchange for my open and honest review. All thoughts are my own.
